Tagging: Eroticism

As invited by Wildly Parenthetical, here’s my contribution to a circulating meme. From Bataille’s Eroticism:

There may been a formalisation of Sabbaths but it was never stable enough to persist. If sacred formalism would have none of it, the unclean was condemned to become profane. The merging of sacred uncleanness and the profane seems to have been for some long time contrary to the feeling about the true nature of things persisting in man’s memory, but the inverted religious structure of Christianity demanded it. (Bataille, 2001, p. 123).

To be honest, Bataille’s book stands in about equal distance to Primo Levi’s Survival in Auschwitz, but I feel the former is more suitable for a Sunday afternoon.
